Chip, I think your parents are investment geniuses! I looked at PFE on Yahoo and they only go back 25 years when it sold for about $1 and now it sells for about $26 for a 14% annual return. I added up the dividends PFE paid for a total of $6.32. Now PFE is paying $1.16 in dividends per year for a 116% yield on the basis if bought 25 years ago. I bet the story is even better if one goes back 50 years. I think when one dies and their heirs inherit their stocks they get to reset the basis to the price at death and so could if need be resell it tax free. Wow! I just realized the story's even better than that because I underestimated the total dividend payout by not adjusting for the many stock splits. I sure hope I can do that for my kids.

Why can't the producing metals miners do the same?
