It certainly seems unlikely when you look at the recent history of Indonesian attitudes to Chinese residents. Also the underlying Islamic Jihad thinking. But Maoris used to eat Europeans when they first explored the Pacific Ocean. Captain Cook was eaten in Hawaii.

Nevertheless, over the centuries and even quite quickly, Maoris and the English formed a common purpose. Maoris wanted English cash, goods and trade, muskets to kill opponents and generally be symbiotic. English wanted land. Maoris had lots of spare land which they could sell to the silly English for lots of good stuff.

Now, with Auckland being worth umpty $billion with land selling at $1000 per square metre, Maoris are wanting to renege on the deal. Of course Auckland was just swamp and bush at the time, so it wasn't worth anything other than as bait to get the English to move in.
