The funny part was that those calendar spreads were my bear strategy because if the stock had collapsed to $2-2.50 area the Mays would have been significantly higher valued than Aprils given time value's re-emergence as important.

One way to avoid some of these problems is to use puts - if one side is early exercised you are long stock vs. your long put. Bear strategies can be constructed with puts or with calls.
