Thats a good analogy. Unfortunately I don't think they can or should renegotiate with retiree's. They already made a deal with those people and I don't think its right to go back on your word. What it all means is that pay packages and health benefits will have to be greatly reduced for current employees.

You are spot on! I have a friend at church who is a retired GM exec. He said the retirees pensions are out of line and the unions are demanding more. They can't compete with Toyota and Honda and the others, who don't have these ridiculous arrangements. Just yesterday they announced Toyota was now outselling GM and are growing. The unions will prevent GM and Ford from lasting much more than a decade, give or take. Those auto workers will go to the Japanese manufacturers, at a more appropriate wage and without all the added benefits, or find a different line of work at an even lower wage.
