Yes but new cars were 2000 bucks then also. My grandpa would trade every year and a one year trade would cost him 400 bucks. Same trade today would cost you between 5 and 7K minimum.

My parents were more like the way I was. They bought a new car and then drove it for several years. Over the course of twenty years he had three German sedans the last he sold to a friend at about 112K miles. After my mother passed away he bought American cars again. He only bought a new SUV so he could give his several year old minivan to a step child.

However I think the only time he ever got used were a couple of two seaters. One my mother loved for years and the other was mostly garaged and used when other cars were in the shop.

My wife's minivan that Chrysler financed at 0% may be the last new car I buy for a very long time.
