The point isn't that it was unanimous that we were all against Kyoto. I think Kyoto in it's previous form was stupid. Without China and India at the table, it's worthless. So I agree with that.

The point is that you can't leave the negotiating table. We need to stay at that table as long as it takes to get China and India to sign on. I would have played hardball, like denying China WTO membership, working with other countries to institute a carbon tax on all imported Chinese goods to offset the cost of their carbon emmissions, etc.

There are a whole host of things we could have done to entice or bully China to sign on. But nothing got done. Instead, Bush, who lacks any diplomatic skills whatsoever, decided he'd walk away and not try to do anything at all.

What an absolute idiot. No one who doesn't understand diplomacy should be allowed to lead this country.
