Your mistake is treating Sheryl Crow as a real person. It's not. It is a carefully crafted and maintained illusion projected on a person. It is a valuable branded product. The human upon which this product is built is in effect an employee of this product line. When the employee screws up and messes with the value of the product other stake holder must step in and mitigate the damage. That is what her "I'm just joking" statement was - damage control.
