In America, in states which are favorable to handgun owners, it's legal to carry a concealed handgun if you have a concealed carry permit. But if you don't have such a permit, you can carry your gun from your house to your automobile if you carry it in your hand, pointing down, in plain sight.

You run the risk of being arrested for brandishing a weapon but, sexism being what it is, a woman like me will never be arrested for carrying a weapon for self-defense, at least not in Virginia.

My sons, being very tall and broad-shouldered, are going to need concealed carry permits.

As for living someplace safe, there's no such place.

hello maurice, today i worried for my coconut ... for the competition may be too tough around here in the neighborhood ...

news.bbc.co.uk

"Maths enthusiasts are being challenged to answer a sample question from Chinese university entrance tests"

The two tests are here news.bbc.co.uk , the first one is expected to be answered by folks hoping to enter chinese universities, and the second may be answerable by folks who are in the first year of university in britain

britain may be ahead of the usa in math capability and capacity, by the looks of the state of economics and budget

hong kong is supposedly #1 in the world in math education, of course, but i fear my coconut ... well, come to think of it, erita's favorite toy, the one mom just got her after about 60 days of clamoring, is a toy cash register with cash box, credit card scanner, public announcement system, and the usual math functionalities

the coconut, soon to be at 31 months old, can count out any number of similar items / creatures from any page of the sesame book series, and can continue the reading of any key word (usually a noun) in any of her usual books should the reading adult stop at that key word - she reads about 10-15 books per day, some on her own, and others by nanny/mom/dad

she just 'passed' her interview at two kindergartens, and the interviewing teachers are surprised that she coconut can deal in english (preferred) and mandarin (should the adult fail to respond to english) whole sentences, as well as follow instructions to use a tong top pick out walnuts from one plate and move it to another

all wonderful

oops, here she is, just back from ocean park and visiting the newly enlarged panda habitat (expecting two additional occupants within the month, to celebrate the fortunate liberation of HK from the tyranny of British imperialism - I remember that day, the prince and governor got very wet from the pouring rain that sent them packing, just as the precision timed crossing of the frontier by the people's liberation army armored brigade commenced, captivating the audience with multi-angle and multi-position TV camera - at the time, Fortune, Forbes, Times, Newsweek, WSJ, NYT, Economist, Far Esatern Economic Review ("FEER" by Dow Jones) all figured "death of HK" - since then FEER died, WSJ shrivelled, and all except Economist became inconsequential) and the usual 5 storey deep aquarium with the very enormous swimming things - some types of sharks i do not even recognize from past discovery tv watching
