Speaking of third pipes, I continue to be caught off guard whenever I hear individuals who I would otherwise consider knowledgeable speaking glowingly about the prospects of bringing BPL (broadband over utility powerlines) to underserved areas, as was the case in the ongoing hearings before Commerce this week posted by myself and Peter. I sense that some of these folks don't believe a word they're saying, but feel the obligation to include mention of it anyway due to political or job-related pressures. Worse, they may actually believe in it wholeheartedly, to whatever extent the term "believe" can be used here. The only aspect of this that causes me some concern, by which I mean that I feel uncertain on some level, is the possibility that the term BPL might be being used to describe a variant of distribution that uses fiber along the main feeder and distribution routes and wireless access points to serve clusters of end points. Thus far, however, I've not seen such configurations deployed, despite whatever logical reasons there may be for doing so.
