I don't know where you live Peter, but in most states, you can walk into a gun shop, pick out a gun, fill out the ATF form, and walk out, gun in hand, in less than an hour. Your locale may require permits or a waiting period, but not in most places.

And, in most places, you can buy from an individual or sometimes at a gun show, with no paperwork at all.

Despite the propaganda you hear and see from the MSM and television shows, most places don't require registration of guns, either handguns or long guns. After the ATF instacheck, the Instacheck people don't retain your information on file. The only record of your gun purchase is the ATF Form 4473 that is kept on file AT THE GUNSHOP where you buy the gun.
