It didn't look as good as a Sparc machine either - not even close. Again, I might be comparing an older mac model with a new sparc machine - at the time.

I remember the Macs we had at that time actually 1992 when I started college. They were Mac Pluses small screens slow but better than the PCs at the time. The sparc machines were screaming fast had X-Windows and big monitors that had color. UNIX command line was a bigger pain than the drag and drop of the Mac but the color screen and big monitor was nice. Now that Mac OS is UNIX I'll never look back.

You do realize, of course, that talking about the relevance of an 18 year old Mac to today's Mac is like comparing a Model T to today's Ford? Thought so.

The impression I got was that macs were not as easy to use as the Unix box in my school wrt floppy.

One of the things you'd notice about the Mac vs. other machines is that there's no eject button on the floppy drive. You had to drag the floppy's icon to the trash to remove the disk. I found the feature disorienting the first couple of times. That might have been the source of your discomfort back then.
