I don't know what is going on here. I have never heard this complaint before. I use a toshiba laptop - I left click the start of the word and while the button is clicked, move the cursor to the right by moving my finger on the mousepad. It is trivial to do. Otherwise, you can always click at the beginning of the word and then press the shift key and move the cursor to the right. I can't believe this is dependent on the machine you are using or Word or Outlook or any other Windows app. This works everywhere. Unless you are physically challenged - in which case accessibility features need to be turned on.

doubleclick the word

Then you can Delete
or Ctrl Shift Right Arrow to get one more word at a time,
or you can right click and do anything on the menu, including correct spelling, get synonyms, etc.

You can't miss doubleclicking on a word.
