Yes, I remember. That was around the time Jobs returned to AAPL, in 1997 :-) In case you don't already know, Yahoo has a very good site for checking historical prices and other stuff, for example finance.yahoo.com

that $12-$13 per share for apple pre-split was in december 1997. Steve Jobs had just come back, and he pushed Steve Kahng and Power Computing out of business for 100million dollars.

Actually the ROE for Power was quite high, even though they were disappointed with the outcome, because Power had sprouted up about 18 mos earlier with almost NO capital outlay. I don't know what kind of return the early investors got, my guess would be about 20x their money in 18 mos- whereas the VC definition of a "big win" is 10x your money - usually in a much longer period of time.

But here's the funny part, that $100mm was paid in Apple stock, at PRECISELY the 90s-decade low for apple stock. Had the recipients of the Power Apple buyout just held their stock they would have made *another* 25 times their money, since the Dec 1997 price for Apple was about 4.5. I suspect everyone from Power sold though, because apple's future was deemed really weak at that time, and it was the great bull market where that money could have been put to use elsewhere like Yahoo which was also in the process of quntupling.
