That's the elephant in the room question, isn't it? I speculate that it really boils down to Ford and GM just not having smart people working there. They've been resting on their laurels for so long, they've forgotten how to lead. You should read some of Iaccocca's recent diatribes. He's almost shaking with anger at not just the auto industry, but the direction this whole country has taken.

Its odd isn't it? Cars and oil have had this relationship for most of the 20th century. From the outside, it looks like a relationship that most benefits oil and that car companies should not give it a second thought. And yet, its like they are wedded in a bad marriage, with GM refusing to do anything that upsets the apple cart. Its inexplicable.
