"Rudy's record between 1993 and 2001 won't stand up to scrutiny on the preparation issue." Scrutiny is the one thing a front-runner status is likely to attract. IMO, his rival candidates (as so too with the Dem field), have held off from public attacks for fear of being tarred with the opprobrium of 'first to go negative'. But the clock is counting down on that level of restraint. Once that initial threshold is passed (in both fields) then we will be at this campaign's next stage.
