No way.

Are you suggesting I'm making up that report?

DMA speculated that it couldn't be a joke because it would be too cruel to the butt of the joke, her fellow travelers. I offered to ask a couple of true believers if they thought was cruel to people like them, if it was, indeed, a joke. I found the truest of true believers I could easily reach (one of whom is an activist), and I asked. That's what each said. I have no reason to falsify my report to you. I asked if it was insulting, as I said I would, and the answer was no.

Here are the exact words of one with regard to whether it was a joke:

>>The interesting part is that she is very subtle. The three ideas have some plausibility. But then come the punch lines: “washing the squares out,” using the dining sleeve to blow your nose, and having the winner of the green contest receive a “recording contract” as the prize<<

That was one of the arguments I made. The punch lines are a giveaway. Even Al Gore devotees aren't humorless enough not to recognize the unserious elements of the proposals.

It's always hard to interpret folks from sub-cultures outside our own experience. We just don't understand the signals. (I have that problem all the time with, say, social conservatives or fundamentalists. <g>) None of us is qualified to interpret for folks who are alien to us, even with the best of intentions. Which are clearly not extant here.

Once again, I'm not saying that it was absolutely a joke, only denying the invalid assertion that it absolutely wasn't.
