Everything I know about illicit use of such drugs is from watching CSI, but on that basis you might be right.

Oxycontin is a controlled release opiate. It is great for pain control due to the sustained low dose of oxycodone, but, the clever abusers discovered they could defeat the controlled release mechanism by the simple expedient of chewing the tablets. And it was game on.
