It depends on the craven-ness of the pols around at the time. I hope we do better, but I doubt we will. A counterpoint might have been Jimmy Carter's reaction to the hostages being taken by our embassy in Iran. When he did nothing, I hated him. I was ready to nuke Tehran and write off the hostages. After all this time, I can see that every one of those hostages owes Jimmy Carter their lives (also that the rescue mission he mounted was a total failure), and they all survived unharmed. I wonder if any of them thanked him? Think of the Americans and Iranians that would have died had he chosen war.
