RE: SF's role in Iraqistan ..
Do we have enough of them to do the job ??
What would you propose we do with the regulars ??
Bring them home or reposition ??

Hi Triff,
Long time no see.

The answers are:

We have enough. Do we have enough in country is another question. We may have that too but many are misemployed. We could get more in there by cutting back on other deployments.

Bring most home. Leave a support force for the ODAs.
The surge is a foolhardy conventional general's attempt to introduce more firepower to the battlefield disguised as unconventional warfare. It is anything but unconventional.

I do not expect SF to get the role they should have had from the beginning. When Petreaus announces the surge failed, there will be no appetite left in America for attempting another tactic. This war needs to be settled politically, and soon, with neither side winning a military victory. Otherwise it is going to expand.

What we can do is begin to write new rules and new tactics for the next fight...because it will not be far behind this one. If we keep doing what we are doing now, we will keep getting what we are getting now.
