"Bush's backing could be the kiss of death for a candidate right now." I think a friendly 'wink and a nod' from Bush could probably HELP one of these candidates make inroads with the rank-and-file Party faithful (at least in certain States) --- although any showing of preference or partiality would provoke HOWLS of outrage from other G.O.P. candidates... but, in the GENERAL ELECTION CAMPAIGN to come, I am pretty-much in agreement with your point-of-view: They will RUN from Bush to win.
