One of my great uncles was killed during the Civil War in the battle of Pleasant Hill, LA. He was 24, and hadn't yet married, so no children. He wrote a letter to his sister, my 2 great grandmother, that said he truly believed the Union was going to fail without people supporting her, and he didn't want the Union to fail. So he "put down his plow" and went to Mason City and registered for the Union. He was wounded in the above battle on April 9, 1864, and died one month later, as a POW of the Confederates. I still don't know where he is buried.

He and so many others like him, fought so that our Union could survive. I wonder today, if we would really survive, if we had to rely only on men and women like him.

I used to be hopeful. But I'm not sure of that any more. We have a lot of takers, but I don't see a lot of givers.

I thank everyone of you who have served your Country. I try to do what I can too, even though I'm too old to actually wear a uniform....
