Iraq was screwed up long before we arrived to liberate the people. Iraq was a threat to civilized society. We have changed that, and because we did not dedicate enough troops to keeping the peace initial, the terrorists gained valuable time to get entrenched and to meet up with the thuggish Baathists, and the recently freed criminal element. The complication of having troops mis-positioned when Turkey retracted their invitation to transport through Turkey screwed up the kind of troops that were in each wave; with Marines forced to be infantry and the Army's First Division ill equipped to police as the Marines rotated out. To walk away from a problem that morphed because of American actions to fight the War On Terror is irresponsible. The course suggested by the chicken hawks is one designed to emasculate the American Military. This will play well in Europe where they long since emasculated their militaries. It is responsible to try to provide the police support and to protect the citizens so that a civilized society can re-emerge. How many Americans have to die before we cut and run? Instead, how many Americans have to die in the next attack before you write to me saying how sorry you are for suggesting we secede and leave the battle ground spoils to the terrorists? We did not make it worse, we changed the problem. I don't buy the theory that Middle Easterners can't sustain a free society, nor do they deserve to be free. That would rile all of the great Presidents from our history. Would Lincoln have said, "never mind, keep the slaves."? Would Washington have said, "never mind, we really want to pay exorbitant taxes to the crown."?
