Howard Dean was deemed the "front-runner" for months before Iowa. Gore even stepped out and endorsed Dean at the time because of his popularity.

That was before his campaign started imploding, allowing John Kerry to manage a come-from-behind victory. That outburst by Dean after Iowa was just icing on the cake.

Reports say that the Dean campaign ran afoul of many Democrat insiders, and that created a lot of infighting that wasn't exposed to the media until after the damage was obvious. To make a long story short, the Dems eventually settled on a guy who turned out to be an absolute dud against Bush. Whoops.

Let me see here.........you started by saying the "Clinton attack machine" would make short order of any Dem candidate besides Hillary. I responded by pointing out that the Dems are not nearly as ruthless as the GOP. You responded by suggesting that Howard Dean was a casuality of "the Clinton attack machine".......actually you said Dem insiders. Now, as I understand it, Howard Dean going ballistic in Iowa is what put the kabosh on his campaign.

So then, are you suggesting that "the Clinton attack machine"/Dem insiders so riled Dean he could no longer control his temper? And can you explain to me why "the [so called] Clinton attack machine" was in full operative mode back in 2004 even though Hillary wasn't running? And if you did not mean "the Clinton attack machine" vis a vis Howard Dean and his campaign, can you see how off topic this post exchange has become?
