Gates, chairman of the Redmond, Wash., software giant, sold the 3 million shares in several transactions Tuesday at an average price of $30.28 a share. Following the sales, Gates directly held about 914.5 million shares of Microsfot. He indirectly owns an additional 425,066 shares. Microsoft shares closed Thursday at $30.97.
