its ignorance of the population, they are sold on protecting environment and the oil industry has done a terrible job educating them that drilling can be done without damage. put up huge bond requirements, well enough to clear up any major spill. I expect oil industry doesn't take a position as they know it is a losing one without washington support. It doesn't appear many in washington willing to fight for drilling off shore. Meanwhile oil industry appears to have enough sites to go else where and drill although it is not the united states.
