I don't understand why people insist on using the "believe in" term for evolution. It isn't a religious principle.

Do people "believe in" the theory of relativity? Or do they "think" it is mostly factual? People may "think" evolution happens or doesn't happen, there's no "belief" involved. Either you "think" the evidence fits the theory or you don't.

"watched the Republican debate with some interest. I agree that Chris Mathews did a pretty awful job....loaded questions (non-questions), non-issues, phoney cleverness."

(I actually found it more interesting the second time through. :-)

"Any forum with that many people trying to talk isn't going to work very well, no matter the quality of the speakers."

The rapid-fire 30 second answers and even shorter 'raise your hand if you agree' questions had obvious, er..., shortcomings <g>, but on the other-hand were useful to the extent that they prevented a fair amount of off-topic bloviating and speechifying that normally ensue when you give candidates more time for answers.

(It was on my second pass through when I decided that the short-answer format probably gave as much as it took away.... Anyway, there will be *plenty* more debates, with plenty more and varied formats, so I'm not gonna gripe about this one too much.)

Also, as with the Dems, these first debates serve as 'tune-ups', helping the candidates get into mid-season form and shake the jitters off. <g>

Public impressions (& spin...) were interesting:

Maybe the republicans should have taken their lead from the democrats and not agreed to that host

Just an observation from out in the sticks, I would never vote for a candidate that couldn't handle whatever Chris Matthews has to dish out. They are not running to be the queen of some parade. And I would be dipped in sugar and dropped in a vat of fire ants before I would ever vote for a politician too "dignified & correct" to debate on Fox.

I agree, I think everyone did at least pretty well, considering the circumstances...
