It was just a bad joke. I can't even imagine the stress these fellows have bottled up inside them.

Most WWII men I've known do not talk at all about their experiences. They are starting to now, I think, because they know they are on the way out and it's now or never.

My Father In Law, who flew a B-17 and spent two years in Stalag 3 has told me more about his experiences than he has his own children and wife, possibly because I ASKED about them. They know very little about what happened to him, except the basic facts.

He (and they) are still paying a price for that experience, over sixty years ago now.
