Z, training isn't going to help me unless I want to switch careers. You can build a case for protectionism, but the underlying problem remains. We'll just be fighting a back-court defense against the forces of globalization.

I do have to apologize, though, for providing a straw man example. I thought someone would catch my careful choice of words, "What can my country do for me ..." Personally, I'd rather focus on staying one step ahead of foreign competition using all of the resources available to me as an individual, rather than go crying to Uncle Sam if my job one day gets "outsourced."

As for the way you view society and the economy, ever read "I, Pencil"?

Whether you subscribe to that or The Grapes of Wrath, we can agree that the best way for this society to move forward is to empower and motivate the average American citizen. The difference is that you'd rather focus on the circumstances of those who have it tougher than others, while I'd rather leave that to individual charity and values and have public policy focus on the big picture.
