Not one thing. That "one thing" caused him to reflect on the underlying philosophy of conservatism vs liberalism in our society.

Yes... we all would prefer smaller government and lower taxes, but at the same time we demand more services. Are conservatives in favor of cutting highway and airport funding, food inspections, consumer product safety, military spending or alternative fuels research? Both Reagan and Bush demosished and claim to conservative fiscal responsibility by talking smaller government but then leaving us with a larger government - and a bigger deficit.

Health care? Everyone agrees the current system is failing. Conservatives and liberals disagree on the fix, and those differences are narrowing as the Fortune 500 increase their demands for government to get them out of the health care business.

About the only things left for conservatives to rant about are abortion and gay marriage. They've even lost "family values" battle cry: Each of the top tier republican candidates has multiple marriages... whereas Clinton, Obama and Edwards are still on their first.
