When in college, I lived in a house with several other people.
One of their sisters was a hooker. She came over to the house regularly to complain, relax, vent, or otherwise decompress. I grew to know her and some of her peers who came over occasionally.

In almost all cases they had made some early mistakes which left their prospects for normal employment bleak, but they chose to do what they were doing because they found it less pressure overall.

In general, I would say the attitude was that it was a job, occasionally one they liked, but often just a job. The difference was that their employer didn't care about past mistakes with the law or drugs or tourettes or whatever got them into trouble all the time. I must say that the whole scene changed in the 1980s with AIDs.

The sister got a job with the State govt. once she had the money and experience to look good and act good. Her kid graduated from high school the same year as my daughter.
