No! That's the beauty of it. It absorbs 75% of the shock of your footfall. After I got my pair about this time last year I started walking much more. I also have loose joints, so I had been turning my ankle under and falling on my face when I walked, but now I hardly ever do that. The spring seems to compensate for a faulty ankle somewhat.

They are very nice to walk in and can go on roads and trails as well as sidewalks and malls, but I've tried them in the hills and on rock outcrops and they aren't too good for that. They trap gravel in the spring and are a little tricky on rocks. Also, they are unsafe around a lot of electrical cords or lines.
