"that was the best response of the night! the whole group should have told Matthews the questions he's asking are dumb."

The problem is that they all bought into the format and no one wants to appear rude or overbearing. But imagine if someone took their thirty seconds and said something like this in answer to a dumb question: "Chris, the answer to that question is "yes". But I want now to take the rest of my thirty seconds and express a hope that before the evening is out we will have questions asked all of us about the following: Illegal immigration, and how to address it...the issue of Nuclear proliferation, and how to stop it....what we must do about runaway entitlements like social security and medicare...and finally, how to ensure Americans of all ages have the best health care available to them. These are questions and issues that affect every American and I believe answers to these are what America wants to hear about, not (xx fill in stupid question subject). Thanks for letting me digress".

Maybe then the questions would have been a little better, or at least one candidate would have looked like he was above the fray...
