Not necessarily so.

A quote like that presupposes all unmarried women are slatterns or gold diggers, it is a very cutting generalization for a man to make. A man with any self confidence would not say such a thing.

The quote basically says that at one time his fragile ego was shattered by a woman who tossed him over for a married man and his own peculiar sense of inadequacy struck out with that comment.

Don't compare him with Crichton or Ayn Rand - they at least have/had originality.
