I doubt they expected a take over by Venezuela when they invested in the country. How many decades have the resources been developed and fed into the states? I would think the large oil companies got a decent return on their investments.

the answer is the oil companies go into these countries because of the high rate of return on the investment. nigeria would be another great example of high risk and high reward.
