We call that 'hyperbole. While he wasn't actually a Communist, he was HARDLY a friend of the US or UK. Or NATO. He basically dumped the problem of defendinf western Europe in the hands of his neighbors and opf the US. He `seemingly never recovered from the fact that, not only did France` (and, as a consequence, himself) not emerge from WW2 a major world power, it barely counted at all. Hence the French rush to get a nuke.
