Geode, Bush can't put in "ADDITIONAL PERMANENT" forces, unless by permanent you mean until someone stops him. He's limited in power both in terms of his power as president and the limits of his term.

And he may not have the power to be the "decider" on these issues even over the next year and a half of his term. The Republicans are not all ideologues. In fact a good argument can be made that many of them are the purest politicians we have in government and that they'll move like frogs jumping in unison to the pond water when they feel threatened enough.

They have elections to worry about and the time line for getting this in short recall America's distant memory starts about next September.

When the rats leave the Bush ship there will be no one left to man the oars and Bush will stand alone while the party orchestrates a mutiny or, more likely, he will blame it on the Democrats and negotiate a way out. Either way, it will end soon.

That's the first time I've predicted that.

Now the question is who follows? Will it be McCain who is just as obtuse on the question of using military force but who at least has some integrity, will it be Clinton who has shown absolutely no courage or insight on this issue, or will it be someone else? I hope that it will be someone else but the big money interests have a lot more to say about that than I do and they seem to be lining up already. Ed
