"The whole "Bush = Hitler", or "Bush equals 'Hitler-lite'" idea is ridiculous. "

Like all analogies, it isn't exact. But it is hard to ignore that he is trying to acquire the same sort of powers using the same sort of methods. It is also hard to ignore the fascist tendencies of many of the neocons.

So, is he Hitler? No. Could he become one? Probably not. The US, for example, is a lot stronger with respect to the rest of the world than Germany was.

The real question is, can we become a dictatorship? That answer is 'yes'. If Bush, or any other succeeding president if the laws aren't changed, decides to, that is all it takes. A legal framework for it has been put into place.

Which is why ol' TJ said that "those who are willing to give up their freedoms for a sense of security deserve neither freedom nor security". Not only don't they deserve it, they won't have them.

Another important takeaway is that we should have some sense of perspective. The whole "Bush = Hitler", or "Bush equals 'Hitler-lite'" idea is ridiculous. Its no more true, in fact probably less so, then "FDR was the same as Stalin."

Whether there are similarities or not, and let me say the way the Bush people screen for pro Bush people to be in the audience when he speaks is very much how the nazis worked it, there is a general belief that the Bush
administration has worked over time to strengthen the presidency so that it is more powerful than the other two branches of gov't. That effort has been threatening to many people in this country.

Reinforcing that fear.....look how long its taken to get Bush to rethink his position regarding Iraq. After months and months of growing opposition to the war, an election, a daily confrontation with the new Democratic majority, demonstrations all over the country, and legislation calling for withdrawal from Iraq, it was just this week that there was a glimmer of the possibility that Bush is willing to negotiate and compromise his position.........and that happened only after his own party threatened mutiny. Do you think this is the behavior of a president who believes in democracy? I don't think so!

So, Tim, if you are concerned with the comparisons of Bush to Hitler, then maybe the next presidential election you might consider electing a leader who thinks more about his country and democracy then about favoring his patrons with tax cuts. Just a suggestion.
