And they enjoyed the same advantage France did: To reach them, Warsaw Pact armies had to go through Germany first, triggering the mutual defense clause of the NATO treaty. But neither nation withdrew from any part of the NATO treaty. They kept their word and are still in. Crap keep no crap. De Gaulle richly earned his reputation as a a backstabbing coward.
