But are folks looking at Romney as a candidate who happens to be Mormon, or a Mormon who happens to be a candidate? Romney has a lot of the qualities most people would like in a president, so it's a bit unfair to dismiss him because of what church he goes to. To me, that smacks of 1960 all over again.

I think the secretive and very insular nature of the Mormon church makes it likely that most other religions view it with a certain amount of distrust. The values are good, the church is new, and quite strange. The various secrets of the church are a bit like the Scientology ladder- where you find out more the higher up you get. I don't think most people will be comfortable with that.

I find all religions equally weird, so I don't really have a dog in this fight. I like my political leaders to be a little apathetic in terms of their religiosity, or at least not to let it interfere with their politics.

If you research Mormon beliefs, you really can't consider them Christian. They are kind of a bastard offshoot of Christianity, founded by a former con man who was running the greatest con or was charismatically self-deluded. I lean heavily toward con myself.

The Mormons have a real disadvantage. People were paying attention and writing things down when they were founded, in english! It's a fascinating story. This book is about one third annotated footnotes and is excellent.

A command from the current Prophet and Revelator is considered a command directly from God, which good Mormons are to obey instantly without question. The current prophet is a humble and kind man, but that wasn't always so, and likely won't be in the future. The Prophet also controls the untaxed billions from the 10% tithe every good Mormon must pay to the church. I suspect that's where a lot of Romney's money is coming from, other than his own pocket.
