The only way they will do it is if you are facing them with a gun in your hand? The first one to have a gun drawn doesn't automatically win. Often the first shots, or multiple shots, miss. Also you can be wounded but still fight back (esp. if you are armed), and save yourself. Also, even if you aren't armed, an armed bystander can stop the attacker. And someone you know, may be someone who you have ended a relationship with, including someone who has been abusive, or has stalked you, or has acted in very scary ways. They show up at your house and you can figure there might be something wrong. You don't just gun them down, but you ready yourself for self defense.
