If you Google about Mormons, Nephites, and Lamanites you will find out. Joseph Smith concocted an entire alternate history to account for the Mayan & Aztec civilizations (what little he knew of them). It would have been OK as SciFi I guess, but was a very bad move in terms of making a religion out of it. He of course most likely failed to foresee what subsequent archeology as well as biology via DNA might have to say on the matter.

The current approach of the Mormon church appears to be that evidence of the Nephites and Lamanites, has somehow vanished, so it has moved out of the domain of facts?? Yet they were concocted to account for all those ruins in Central & South America. Not sure how this one will play out, but it serves as a good reality check for anyone dallying with founding a religion. Stick to the ephemeral. Nobody can prove that the Angel Moroni is fictional, so that sort of thing is safe to blather about, but don't make up histories and claim that certain peoples are descended from other regions, or you might be proven a liar.

In fairness, I don't think that Mormons are particularly worse than other people. But their religion does require them to swallow a good deal more nonsense, including stuff like the above which is easily seen to be nonsense. I don't want nonsense believers as President of the most powerful nation on earth.
