but they'd like to kill loggers by spiking trees and such

Not true. They don't just spike trees--they tell people that some of the trees in the area that is designated to be clear cut is spiked. They just want to prevent the old growth trees from being cut. Spiking them doesn't kill the trees, it just means that it can't be milled until the spikes are removed, it raises the cost of logging for the company, and makes at least some cuts uneconomic. Which is the point for the spikers. If they wanted to kill people, they would. But they respect life. All life. Not just human life.

People from ELF or EarthFirst! don't want to kill or even hurt anyone. That is why calling them "ecoterrorists" is wrong, is just what the govt and especially the logging companies and the illegal fishery companies, and their other targets want you to believe. Terrorists target people. Environmentalists target specific projects that they believe are harming the wilderness or old growth areas or the environment generally. Are there goons among them? Perhaps. But their record of not actually killing anyone (and only harming a couple of people, which they would argue was because their spiking warnings were ignored by the companies, who didn't bother telling the mills that there might be spikes in the trees--and then blamed the spikers, lol) is impressive. Compare that with the murders or attempted murders of environmentalists by logging and ranching sympathizers in particular, and it becomes even more impressive. The ranchers who graze on public lands do it very cheaply, and routinely overgraze, then get angry when environmentalists tell them that they are overgrazing. Who is the extremist there?
