I worked with many Mexican tree planters earlier in my career, and always made friends with them by trying to speak in Spanish. Later our government gave me the opportunity to give input on whether we should print our inspection cards and other materials in Spanish. I said "No way, Jose! We do business in English only. Spanish is for making friends."

I believe the key is treating people with respect, no matter what the language. If everybody in the world did that, we'd have no wars.

It has been said that the French are especially haughty to people who do not speak French in their country. They are reportedly slightly less haughty when a person does not speak French fluently.
