Yeah? Take a look at this chart and what has happened to the price of oil in the last 8 years.

Up 350% in 8 years. Oil trades at the margin of supply and demand. The US uses 25% of supply. Even a significant commitment to alternate energy and efficiency would reduce the risk factor and the price (both from the raw material and refining constraints). As demand decreased, even slightly, the price would go way down. It's the way the markets work... it's sort of the reverse of (your support of) gouging.
