Chancels, i agree with many of the concerns you raise. i am more worried about politicians meddling with refiners than i am worried about crack spreads declining. however, you write:

They all suffer the potential to have someone set up next door.

i don't think refiners are too worried about having competitors "set up next door." the last new US refinery was built in 1976. it is hard to think of a business with a better moat, and in VLO's case, it is very well positioned to capture the sour discount in this age of diminishing sweet crude.

but politicians, they are an unknown quantity of evil that could rain on the refiners' parade.
