Your statement...."For example, if the non-observant "Jew" is an American, they are known as American. If born and living in Canada, they would be known as Canadian.".... So you say they are no longer a Jew or Jewish...ya don't think they would be Jewish American or Jewish Canadian? In your mind just cuz they don't practice Judaism they are no longer Jews? even though both parents are jews? How about the native indian whose land you occupy..if he/she was born to catholic native indian parents and he she no longer practices the religion ...by your reasoning this native whose land you occupy would no longer be native he/she would just become American? There is such a thing as ethnology that has nothing to do with religion.
