We use small "recorders" to save a history of operation. They should be able to isolate it rather quickly.

Are you losing any lights on your modem? Wonder if it's a hardware problem or IP related?

My DSL had a similar problem, it was their darn DNS server. I started using a different public server for lookups.

Traceroute would be good to use the next time it stops working if it's not an obvious hardware failure somewhere.
