I'm pretty sure we'll see a automation induced meltdown before 2009.

I've no doubt in my mind, but think it will come far sooner than that.

Ironically, and not surprisingly, all of the measures which are ruining execution quality and drowning the markets in messaging - decimals and the early steps toward the implementation of Reg NMS, in particular - are populist-spirited regulatory initiatives brought about to save, protect, or otherwise help the (cough, cough) 'individual investor.'

The question never asked is: are we attending to the interests of the individual investor with the online brokerage account, or the individual investor with the IRA, 401K, and mutual funds?

It's a relevant question, as their interests are not aligned, even - perhaps especially - when they are the same person. And they usually are.
