Imports climbed to 14.82 million metric tons (about 3.6 million barrels a day) last month as exports fell 17 percent to 550,000 tons, the Beijing-based Customs General Administration of China said on its Web site today. From January to April, China's purchases rose 11 percent to 54.46 million tons, while exports slumped 55 percent to 1.07 million tons. China's economy expanded 11.1 percent in the first quarter, boosting fuel consumption in the world's second-biggest energy market. The government's plan to build an emergency oil stockpile is supplementing demand. By 2010, the reserve will be equal to 30 days of imports, Chen Deming, vice chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission, said April 21. ``As China fills emergency stockpiles and demand for cars continues to rise, we will see further gains in oil imports in the summer,'' Wu Jun, an analyst with China International Futures (Shanghai) Co., said by telephone. In the first three months of the year, vehicle production surged 22.6 percent to 2.19 million vehicles and sales rose 22 percent to 2.12 million, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. Oil Bill The nation's oil-import bill rose 4.1 percent to $22 billion in the first four months and reached $6.5 billion in April, customs said. Oil-product imports rose 4.1 percent to 11.62 million tons between January and April and reached 3.64 million tons last month. Oil-product exports rose 25 percent in the first four months to 5.25 million tons and stood at 1.42 million tons in April. China slashed coal exports 28.6 percent to 15.87 million tons in the first four months. Exports last month reached 4.46 million tons, customs said. The nation's oil consumption will grow by 6.4 percent in 2007 to 7.6 million barrels a day, the International Energy Agency forecast May 11.
