As a former life-long Republican, I tend to think, unfortunately, that the men behind the curtain who control the Republican Party would rather run the typical political hack like McCain or Giuliani and risk losing the Presidency in 2008, thinking they'll have a shot to take it back in 2012, rather than run Paul and win in 2008, and lose control of the Party to him for eight years, and perhaps have their insider bucks-for-buddies deals shut down for good. Ron Paul and Tom Coburn of Oklahoma would be the dream ticket, but there's too much money and corruption involved in both Parties to allow them to run. I imagine the Dem Party string pullers are just as afraid of Ron Paul as are their Rep counterparts. Both sides would rather take turns at the trough rather than have an outsider come in and clean house. Sigh.
